Mulled wine (Glühwein): The ultimate winter hot drink!

Recipe ingredients

  • 1 lt dry red wine (Agiorgitiko or Merlot or Pinot noir)
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar (or brown or even better honey)
  • 2 oranges
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/4  cardamom
  • 2 star anise
  • 10 whole carnations
  • 1 grated nutmeg
  • 1 vanilla stick or 1/2 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 150 ml brandy or brandy or aged rum

Implementation

First we start by cutting the 1 orange into slices and nailing the carnations on them. Then, squeeze the second one and strain the juice.

Cut the vanilla in half, from top to bottom.

Heat the water with the sugar or honey over a medium heat.

Once the mixture is homogenized, add the dry red wine and the rest of the spices. That is, the grated cardamom, the asteroid anise, the cinnamon sticks, the orange slices with the nailed cloves, the vanilla or the vanilla extract.

Finally, grate a nutmeg.

Add the orange juice.

Allow the mixture to heat over medium heat, without boiling for about 15 to 20 minutes. We do not want it to boil because the alcohol will evaporate.

Then remove the pot with the hot wine from the heat. Add the brandy or cognac or, if desired, the aged rum.

Strain and serve the red mulled wine in a hot glass of brandy or any other glass we wish, as long as it is hot so that it does not break.

Serving

We can garnish with a slice of orange or orange peel, but avoiding the white flesh of the orange so that our wine does not become bitter.
We can also garnish with cinnamon sticks or asteroid anise or freshly ground pepper. We can put all this together.
